The Musical Evolution of C. Tangana: From Crema to El MadrileÃo


C. Tangana is one of the most influential and successful artists in the Spanish music scene. He has experimented with different genres and styles, from hip-hop to new flamenco, from pop rap to Latin music. But how did he start his musical career And how did he transform from Crema, his first stage name, to El MadrileÃo, his latest album title


C. Tangana was born as AntÃn Ãlvarez Alfaro in Madrid in 1990. He began rapping under the pseudonym Crema in 2006, while he was attending graduate school. He released a seven-track EP titled Ãl Es Crema (2005), followed by another EP Septiembre and an album El Es Crema (2007). His early material was influenced by the Beastie Boys and showed his skills as a rapper and lyricist.


In 2011, he joined the band Agorazein, a collective of hip-hop artists from Madrid. He also released his first solo album under the name C. Tangana, which was self-titled and self-released. He continued to collaborate with Agorazein on their albums Kind of Red (2011) and Siempre (2016), as well as with other artists such as Sticky M.A., Jerv, Agz., Fabianni, and I-Ace.


In 2016, C. Tangana began to gain mainstream recognition with his single "Antes de Morirme", featuring rising flamenco sensation RosalÃa. The song was a hit in Spain and Latin America, and was included in his debut studio album Ãdolo (2017), released by Sony Music. The album also contained the successful singles "Mala Mujer", "Pop Ur Pussy", and "Llorando en la Limo".


In 2018, C. Tangana released his mixtape Avida Dollars, which was inspired by the life and work of Pablo Picasso. The mixtape explored different genres and influences, such as trap, jazz, soul, and rock. It also spawned the top twenty single "Bien Duro". He continued to release standalone singles that showcased his versatility and creativity, such as "Booty" (featuring Becky G and Alizzz), "Nunca Estoy", "Un Veneno" (featuring NiÃo de Elche), and "Yelo".


In 2021, C. Tangana released his second studio album El MadrileÃo, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The album was a tribute to his hometown Madrid and its musical heritage, blending flamenco, Latin music, pop, folk, and hip-hop. The album featured collaborations with artists such as Jorge Drexler, Kiko Veneno, AndrÃs Calamaro, Toquinho, Eliades Ochoa, La Húngara, Gipsy Kings, Ed Maverick, Omar Apollo, Pepe Blanco, and Josà Feliciano. The album became the best-selling album in Spain in 2021.


C. Tangana has proven to be one of the most innovative and diverse artists in the Spanish music industry. He has evolved from Crema to El MadrileÃo, from hip-hop to flamenco, from underground to mainstream. He has also been involved in other projects such as Little Spain (a creative collective), FLACA (a clothing brand), and Chica Gang (a female empowerment platform).
